The Importance of Preventing Postpartum Anorexia and Providing Postpartum Care in Sows
With the arrival of summer and rising temperatures, favorable external conditions are created for bacterial proliferation. In particular, in certain southern provinces—such as Guangdong, Guangxi, and Jiangxi—the onset of the plum‑rain season brings hot, humid weather, providing an ideal “breeding ground” for bacteria on pig farms. During May and June, a technical consultant provided on‑site support at a large‑scale sow farm in Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, which houses 1,000 sows. Over this period, detailed monitoring of the postpartum status of approximately 100 sows revealed the serious consequences of postpartum anorexia and underscored the critical importance of postpartum health care. Causes and clinical manifestations: The main factors commonly associated with postpartum anorexia in sows include the following…

Why is porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) so difficult to prevent?
Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is an acute, highly contagious intestinal disease caused by the infectious pathogen—porcine epidemic diarrhea virus. It poses a significant threat to pig producers. So why is PED so difficult to control? The virus’s virulence: Infected pigs, virus‑carrying but clinically asymptomatic pigs, and convalescent pigs can all serve as sources of infection, with fecal–oral transmission being the primary route. Spring and winter are the peak seasons for this disease. PED is particularly devastating in nursing piglets, with mortality rates that can reach as high as 100%. Strain complexity:

The head dictates the pocket—business philosophy is the very heart of a pig farm’s profitability!
Pigs are an economically important livestock species, and the primary goal of large-scale pig farming is profitability. However, achieving profitability in actual production is far from easy. This raises the question: what are the key factors that determine a pig farm’s profitability? As managers, how can we ensure we turn a profit? Despite building a “Five‑Star Pig Farm,” it still failed to generate profits. Mr. Li, a post‑1960s entrepreneur with many years of experience in animal husbandry, had worked tirelessly over the years to grow his operation into a sizable enterprise. He had also conducted numerous visits to overseas pig farms. Based on this, he concluded that the domestic pig‑raising industry lagged behind mainly because local farms were not as well‑designed or aesthetically pleasing, and that investment in infrastructure was insufficient. Consequently, in 2008, he decided to construct a “state‑of‑the‑art” pig farm.

Since August 2018, African swine fever has swept across China. This highly contagious and lethal disease has inflicted enormous losses on the country’s pig‑raising industry. As the combined impact of African swine fever and the cyclical nature of the pig market has led to a sustained decline in production capacity and persistently high pork prices, pig farmers’ enthusiasm for resuming production has been steadily increasing. However, at present, there is still no effective vaccine or medication available for the prevention or treatment of African swine fever. Therefore, measures that can effectively curb the spread of the virus, prevent its entry into pig farms, and reduce stress among pigs—thereby stabilizing production—are crucial to the success of biosecurity‑driven recovery efforts. High‑dose, frequent immunization, by contrast, is counterproductive to both preventing the disease and facilitating a successful resumption of production.

At present, the poultry industry has entered an era of intensive, standardized, and intelligent farming. With the widespread adoption of automated and smart equipment in farms, the professional requirements for workers are steadily rising, and job roles have become increasingly specialized. Vaccination is a critical measure for ensuring farm safety and controlling infectious diseases. Currently, vaccine administration is carried out by dedicated immunization teams, and the accuracy of procedures and the quality of immunization are key factors that significantly impact farm performance. In recent years, as market demand for vaccination has grown, grassroots immunization service teams have emerged. However, many such teams today exhibit uneven levels of professional expertise; therefore, in the course of vaccination operations…

Recently, the editor noticed that many pig farmers were extremely pleased, which left them puzzled—why was that? It wasn’t until the editor learned some major news: on November 6, 2018, a highly anticipated launch event was held in Luoyang for a bivalent inactivated vaccine against porcine circovirus type 2 and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, developed over eight years. According to reports, this bivalent inactivated vaccine was meticulously created by Luoyang Huizhong Biotechnology Co., Ltd., leveraging the expertise of the National Engineering Research Center for Veterinary Drugs. It effectively addresses two major challenges faced by pig farmers, enabling them to better manage disease prevention and control in their herds.
